Sues and Foxes
I was looking at
pottersues and it got me thinking about my own Sueish character.
Katherine Jean Summers–this was the first fanfiction character I ever created. I got as far as posting the prologue to the story she was going to be end on fanfiction.net (yes I know, but I was young back then). She was a character in an X-Men AU
She’s been in my head since 1999, and I’ve pretty much decided not to ever right about her. But she’s kind of become something like a muse to me. Now that I think about her, I start to think that she may have had some Sueish tendencies. Katherine was the daughter of two the X-men, Scott Summers and his wife, Jean Grey (it sort of made me said when they broke the couple up in the comics. Scott’s involved with a blonde skank and Jean’s dead again–though when a character’s codename is Phoenix, the chances of them staying dead are small). But I digress. I’ll admit I was rather fond of her background. Katherine’s mother was killed in a totally innocuous way, for a superhero, at least. She was in a car that was hit by a woman who had fallen asleep behind the wheel (single mother, three kid, no money and a cross country road trip don’t mix). At the time of the accident, her mother was six months pregnant. They were able to save the baby but no the mother.
*sniffle–tragic really*
Like any child born that early and survives, the little girl was kept in the NICU (Neonatal or new-born intensive care) for months. Eventually it was discovered that the little girl was death. The father (who had also been in the accident, now had to deal with his wife’s death, his own injuries (he was in the same car) and a disabled child.
*flash forward fifteen years*
The girl is now fifteen and an immensely powerful mutant (hey it wasn’t my fault, blame the comics, they did it first). Beyond that there wasn’t very much special about her (shocking I know). She had a round face, blond hair and brown eyes. Her noes was a little long and she was very tall, skinny and completely flat chested (a bit of wish fulfillment there). She wore mostly turtlenecks and “hippie chick” skirts (long, flowing, lots of prints and colors). She was shy, quiet, a good student and a pretty good artist (she went to a school for the deaf in NY). She didn’t angst unnecessarily (I couldn’t stand stories like that then and I still don’t), had a pretty good relationship with her father and didn’t linger on her mother’s death more than is healty at anytime other than at holidays. She was also a lesbian though that was less important to the story than just about anything else in the story. Kate’s best friend was also tall (though a little shorter than Kate) and pretty (quite a bit prettier than Kate) but more assertive but the two were damn near inseparable (the two had a psychic bond.
I had a whole plot worked, but it didn’t involve her single-handedly saving the world (she did however, contribute to the saving of it as part of a group), I’ve long since given up on ever writing about her but she still lives in my had and encourages me when I’m stuck from time to time.
This all sounded so wonderful to my sixteen year old self (It really doesn't sound that bad to my 21 year-old self.
Oh and on another note, I installed Firefox 1.0 on my computer last night. From the little I've used, I like it very much (am very much in love with the tabs). I have to go and work with it some more before I can say how I feel about the whole thing.
I also have the Sims 2 and it is ridiculous how much time I spend on that game.
I also have to buy a new computer desk before my old one collapses.
*waves goodbye as the money goes down the drain*
