Avatar and Doctor Who Whinging

You know, I've finally realized two things about Avatar: The Last Airbender. I love the show but:

1) I hate most of the voice actors (Well, I like Sokka, Aang and Uncle Iro, but that's it)

2) I don't like Zuko (this was cemented when I finally saw the ep where he and Uncle parted ways. Because Uncle is completely awesome). Maybe this will improve as time goes on.

Also, it seems that Doctor Who is taking forever to download. I know that it isn't really, but I want to see Rise of the Cybermen now, dammit!

I like Katara and Sokka's. And Iroh's most of the time.

Zuko is one of those characters I find interesting, yet I can't really call him a "favorite".

I don't know about the rest of my List, but Avatar is a hugely predictable and forumlatic series where story arcs and character arcs are concerned. Very little on this show has surprised me, genuinely. I suppose it's because it's geared towards an age group where these themes and ideas are still new. If you've read enough books, watched enough movies or television, you can rather easily guess where the story arcs and characters will end up.

Like Zuko, for example. I knew that his character wasn't out and out evil from his first episode and that he'd eventually give up trying to please his old man. The fact he left Iroh didn't surprise me, either, it was a necessary step for the character to 'grow up'. I haven't seen "Zuko Alone" yet, but I'm almost sure that nothing revealed in his past will wow me.

Why do I watch it? I like Katara a lot and it's a show I don't have to waste a lot of energy thinking about. :)

On this, you're correct. I didn't find anything about it particularly surprising (though it did answer a question I'd been wondering about). I do know that it is very predictable. But it's also very charming, at least to me. I like these sorts of stories and I find it much better than most shows currently aimed at children.

Having watched a ton of anime, it's nice to come across a series with anime-styled ideas but done in a less preachy or serious way. ATLB can be dark at times, but if this were an anime, it would've been a lot more heavy-handed.

Also, the female characters are presented in a more favorable light than most anime females. Katara has grown more in a season than some anime females do during the entire run of a series. Then females, like Suki, Toph, Azula, Tai Li and Mei, arrive in the story with formidable skills already developed.

I just finished watching it and I was right. And I completely called the Earth Kingdom family hating him at the end, after they found out his true identity. His mother being a sweetie wasn't a surprise, either. I'm still unsure on whether or not she ran away (to start a resistance to the empire she knew was to rise) or if she was killed. I'd like to believe the former.

You know, no matter how many times I've seen this story in movies, on tv or in books, I never get this part. Why do they always hate him when they discover who he really is? Shouldn't they be able to tell from their own experience that he's not a horrible person.

*sigh*

And speaking of characters I don't really like, I'm not sure how I feel about Toph (hated her idiot father though). She annoyed me throughout the entire episode she appeared in. Hopefully I warm up to her since she's along for the ride. I do in general like the way the show portrays girls though.

That's what always bugs me about that crap when it happens in books, shows, movies - the character spent however much time proving that he is not like the others of whatever group they're prejudiced against, does something like, oh, save their lives, and they hate him?

I like Toph well enough. She's an interesting counterpoint for Aang, the together and usually mature for a 12 year old person. Yeah, her father was a complete ass. But I respected the fact she thought, "Screw him" at the end and ran away.
