It's surprisingly easy once you get the hang of it.
1.If there's a yarn store near you, inquire about classes. If they don't host them, they'll know of a place that does.
2. If there's a senior citizens center near you, inquire if they do classes. I learned quilting one summer from a group of salty old ladies who had me nearly peeing my pants with laughter every ten minutes.
3. Buy a book, but before you do, flip through it and make sure it has easy to understand pictures, or instructions that you can visualize. I recommend "Stitchin' Bitch".
That said, I was fortunate enough to have a friend teach me. Though I never learned proper knit/perl. I learned this crazy-ass reverse wrongside stitch thing that makes everyone who knits go "bwuh?" It's great, though, 'cause the project lays flat. I never have to block it to keep it from curling. :)
