It occurs to me that I can't even remember how LJ used to do journal domains. I remember that it changed from something else to what it currently is but I can't remember what the actual change was.

They only used to do username.livejournal.com for paid users -- free accounts had www.livejournal.com/users/username. Apparently something's less secure about that.
