Doctor Who Fans: Please stop the wank. It's not worth it. "The Girl in the Fireplace" is not the best thing ever. It is also not the worst thing ever. It is, for the most part, a perfectly middling episode (I didn't like it, but that's not the same thing as it being bad). Now for those who loved it, those of us who didn't are not stupid, blind shippers are crazy asexualist. While some of the people who didn't like it undoubtably fit into those categories, by no means do all. I did not find the story either interesting or engaging. I did not like Sophia Myles portrayal of Madame du Pompadour. There were lines of dialog that, frankly, made me cringe (though, to be fair, that's happened in just about every DW ep I've watched). I did not like the "logic" behind the clockwork machine's stalking of Reinette and I really didn't like the scene where she entered his mind (that sort of thing causes my MS sense to tingle). There were some interesting ideas, but basically, I didn't like the execution. And I felt that came to soon after "School Reunion" which covered the same sort of ground from a different angle.

Basically, I'm saying that because I didn't like it, does not make me somehow inferior or stupid. I. Just. Didn't. Like. It.

Nor should those who dislike it, insult those who did like it. Everyone is entitled to their personal opinion and it's perfectly fine for people to say that they loved the episode. What's not fine is either side attacking the other. This sort of thing is why I tend to give up on fandomy things after the first rush fades. I don't understand the need for wank and I think it's silly. I think I'll take a fandom break until the middle of the week, where the squee for "Rise of the Cybermen" will outway the wank from this episode. I half think that none of this makes any sense but I don't really care right now.

I've avoided the comms because of all of the wank. I hated the episode, and I admit, am quite puzzled that so many people did, but I can't stand to see people fighting over personal preference. It's like religion and politics - no one will change anyone else's opinion on something that is formed on preference as such.

I'm not in the asexual camp. I used to believe he was, simply because people said the old series had no romantic aspect. After seeing a reasonable amount of the classic eps, I've changed my position. It does, because there's no way that Five didn't have more than friendly feelings for Tegan. And Four felt a lot more than comraderie where Romana is concerned. It's simply not like it is today in television, it's regulated to subtext. Which I rather enjoy and leaves tons of room for interesting speculation in fan fic.

What I do find myself complaining about where the ep is concerned is the lack of logic and inconsistent characterization for Ten. The episode was a jumbled mess, and it was an extreme disappointment since it's writer gave us two of the best series one episodes - "The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances".

I'll do what I did after "Tooth & Claw", watch old Who and wait for the next ep. 3 had Sarah Jane, and episode 5 is the return of the Cybermen. I need aspects of the old series to help save the new one for me.

m quite puzzled that so many people did,

DIDN'T. I need to stop commenting and multi-tasking.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who thought it didn't make sense (though to be honest, I'll admit I rather liked T&C, though I quite understand why you didn't). When I find something new to like I invariably go online and try to find people to talk about it with. And just as invariably I end up sick to my stomach with the amount wank, vitrol and sheer stupidity that goes on. I'll admit I expected a lot more from this episode because I did enjoy his two from last series so much, so I'm disappointed despite the fact that I really wasn't interest in the ep in the first place. I know he can do better so in peeves me that he didn't.

Re: The asexual thing, well I never subscribed to it because I've always known that the lack of overt romance was an editorial decision so I never really saw the need to fanwank it into a character trait.

I've practically dropped out of my anime/manga fandoms because of the fans. They take everything about the series and drive it into the ground. Naruto's is probably the worst where this is concerned, and they wank over the dumbest things! Who cares which generation fan you're considered? We all enjoy/enjoyed the series, don't we? House's fandom has succeeded in annoying the crap out of me with their stupid 'ship wars.

What's sad is that someone else on my List just got into DW and I was telling her about how great the fandom's been. They can debate opposing viewpoints without it spiraling into childish "Well, I'm right because I said so!" baloney. ::sigh:: "Girl ..." airs and what does the fandom do? Just that. I was dumbstruck at how the comm erupted last week over the Sarah Jane deal, and who does/did the Doctor luv?

I'll admit I expected a lot more from this episode because I did enjoy his two from last series so much, so I'm disappointed despite the fact that I really wasn't interest in the ep in the first place.

Some are blaming the 45 minute time limit on it not being as good. That's BS, because they've done excellent television - for countless shows - within a 45 minute time limit. When the script is an incoherent bumbling mess from the start, you can't blame time constraints for it being crap. Maybe if they'd chosen a different guest actress for the Madame role, because I'm highly against couples playing off of each other like this. You're never sure if it's them or the character reacting in a certain way. As I mentioned before, I'm damn sure that was Sophia and David on the screen for most of that episode, not Reinette and the Doctor.

(As a sidenote, I'm tired of the episodes taking place somewhere on earth or when it's out in space, being directly LINKED to Earth. Y'all forget what the "S" in TARDIS stands for?! It happened a lot last series, but I was willing to forgive it. I want to see the Doctor on an alien planet, dealing with an alien lifeform, for the love of Mike!)

Heh. I heard there was wank about the episode, but I'm not really in the fandom, so I didn't notice it. I really liked the episode, but I absolutely agree with you on being annoyed when people make you feel inferior or stupid if you didn't like an episode they did and vice-versa.

Was there "Rise of the Cybermen" squee? I thought it was all right, but not squeeful.

I don't know, it just seemed the sort of thing that a lot of fans would have liked. I didn't know at the time, I was just really annoyed. I liked ROTC, but then again, there are certain concepts that just can't loose with me And there wasn't as much wankiness after the episode. That always makes me feel better.
