Doctor Who Fans: Please stop the wank. It's not worth it. "The Girl in the Fireplace" is not the best thing ever. It is also not the worst thing ever. It is, for the most part, a perfectly middling episode (I didn't like it, but that's not the same thing as it being bad). Now for those who loved it, those of us who didn't are not stupid, blind shippers are crazy asexualist. While some of the people who didn't like it undoubtably fit into those categories, by no means do all. I did not find the story either interesting or engaging. I did not like Sophia Myles portrayal of Madame du Pompadour. There were lines of dialog that, frankly, made me cringe (though, to be fair, that's happened in just about every DW ep I've watched). I did not like the "logic" behind the clockwork machine's stalking of Reinette and I really didn't like the scene where she entered his mind (that sort of thing causes my MS sense to tingle). There were some interesting ideas, but basically, I didn't like the execution. And I felt that came to soon after "School Reunion" which covered the same sort of ground from a different angle.
Basically, I'm saying that because I didn't like it, does not make me somehow inferior or stupid. I. Just. Didn't. Like. It.
Nor should those who dislike it, insult those who did like it. Everyone is entitled to their personal opinion and it's perfectly fine for people to say that they loved the episode. What's not fine is either side attacking the other. This sort of thing is why I tend to give up on fandomy things after the first rush fades. I don't understand the need for wank and I think it's silly. I think I'll take a fandom break until the middle of the week, where the squee for "Rise of the Cybermen" will outway the wank from this episode. I half think that none of this makes any sense but I don't really care right now.
