I've been catching up on Battlestar Galactica and I think it's a good show. And like any good show, it gets immediately compared to my favorite show Veronica Mars. And there isn't much about these shows that are similar and my point actually concerns how they are different. Despite all of the darkness that is present on Battlestar Galactica (I mean it's basically a show about what happens after the end of the world), I think there's a basic sense that despite the horrible things that happen on the show, there's a sense that people have the capacity for great good. There's an element of hope about the nature of humanity. That there is a great deal of good in it.
On Veronica Mars, the basic moral that I've gotten from the entire series is that "People suck, really, really hard. I mean really, really HARD". The epynonymous character is an admitted misanthrope and just about most of the characters are morally questionable (and even the ones that aren't do things that aren't exactly kosher). My point is that the show with the "rag-tag group of survivors after the end of the world" is more hopeful about the nature of the human spirit than the one with the "girl detective".
Well, at least I find that intriguing.
